40 YEARS OF
EXCELLENCE
2008 marks the 40th Anniversary of the
Annual Decoy and Wildlife Art Show and Competition held at Clayton
Recreation Park, East Line Road, the third weekend in July. The three
day event is one of the biggest and best in the entire United States,
and international winners will exhibit and sell their artwork. Special
events include the Art Knapp Hunting Decoy Contest, Ken Harris St.
Lawrence River Gunning Rig Contest, Youth Contest and Auction.
World championship duck
decoy carvers will be represented, as well as carvers of
songbirds, birds of prey, animals, fish and related
wildlife. During the show many of the exhibitors may be
seen carving or painting. The variety of styles, media
and composition by these wildlife artists is outstanding.
From canvas to watercolor, painting on driftwood, the
artistic talent is exceptional.
Represented on the
collectors exhibit tables are not only the St. Lawrence
River carvers, but nearly all of the truly collectible
decoys. Buying, trading and selling takes place on the
exhibit floor along with a "tale" or two for
entertainment. the antique collectors as well as
contemporary decoy buffs will find themselves like a
child in a candy store.
There will also be an
array of unfinished wood decoys to take home and finish
for the would be artists. the smell of freshly carved
pine in the Arena will be hard to resist. Handcrafted
wildlife jewelry of wood, silver, gold or pewter will
please and tempt the visitors as well as the many
sculptures of wildlife in every media.
Need that fish, bird, or
animal mounted? There will be taxidermy exhibitors to
preserve your treasure. Wildlife art print collectors
will be offered an opportunity to add to their collection
from the works of artists in attendance.
The Decoy Show is
sponsored by the Thousand islands Museum which preserves,
documents, and exhibits artifacts and historical data
pertaining to the history of the St. Lawrence River. The
Museum currently houses the Best of Show winners from the
Decoy show along with the other collections of St.
Lawrence River and Ontario area duck decoys along with the award winning
muskie exhibits and
is open 7 days a week during the season.
